I presented my ideas for this project to be an economical and flexible solution for the cultural arts center in Columbia, SC. I designed my project to be a pattern of precast panel walls with the same size cut out for garage doors or a standard door with windows. The roof system is steel frame with finished ceilings and solar tubes coming down into spaces that call for natural lighting. I titled this project The Music Garage to reinforce the use of the garage doors as well as provide some hierarchy to program. The garage doors will allow for equipment needed for art and music creation to be moved in and out of the buildings easily. Also, the garage doors can act as natural ventilation system when the weather is mild while allowing for users to use the interior and exterior areas.
Feedback
-To develop the story of the 'The Music Garage' more
-Only use garage doors where they are going to be used as garage doors
-Bring in hierarchy to show where entrances are located
-Use of solar tubes approved
-Create a hallway to connect the classrooms
-Reuse the lower buildings on the site since the community values them (reuse building where cafe is located)
-Appreciated the building section drawing
-Need improvement on site plan - too much hardscape, needs grass area
-Provide area to be still to view the projection facade as if a movie would be playing (grass area to sit on)
-Find way to break the pattern (no suggestions on how - I hadn't broken it because I hadn't thought of a good way to do so yet)
Overall the feedback was as I expected, so I consider it went really well. They liked what I have going on so far, just that it still needs work, but I completely agree.
Moving forward, I plan to address all of the feedback I had received. I am going to work inside out. So, first addressing the interior issues, then the building envelope, and finally the site. I believe I can solve the issue of entrance marking and breaking the pattern of the building with the same solution. I am planning on revisiting my site plan once I take care of the interior of my buildings. For the interiors, I will redo the plan of the education building, decide more specifically where garage doors will go, and consider more carefully where the solar tubes are needed and where the lighting fixtures will be. For exterior of the buildings, I will come up with a solution for the entrances of the buildings - perhaps I need a main entrance for each building then a solution for secondary entrances. Lastly, the site plan I am planning to make digitally and address more detail to green spaces as well as grey water collection to be reused.
Shaffer asked me if I thought of the title The Music Garage myself or if it was already an idea that I took. I had thought of it myself, but I did some research and found a place in Chicago that goes by the same title and I thought I could use some of their ideas to develop my project. So, they rent out space as well as equipment for creating music, which is something I could suggest One Columbia to do.
