Trees Are More than Just Trees

Collecting more detail information on the types of trees I have selected for my site for future reference of what these trees will bring to the site.

Palmetto Palm

- State tree

- Capable of withstanding various conditions such as ice and snow

- Height up to 60-80' and 1-2' diameter

- Capable of living in variety of soils of the North and South Carolina as well as Florida

- The gray to brown bark has shallow furrows circling the stem and is often covered with persistent, dead leaf bases

- The flowers are bisexual and appear on branched stalks that protrude from the trunk similar distance as that of the leaves

- Smooth, round and shiny black drupe ¼ to ¾ inch long in diameter and borne in clusters on long stem, containing a single seed

- The drupe is consumed by deer, bear, raccoon, squirrel, bobwhite, and wild turkey

Red Maple

- Known for featuring something red in each of the seasons—buds in winter, flowers in spring, leafstalks in summer, and brilliant foliage in autumn

- Relatively rapid growth: 13"-24" per year

- Height of 40–60' and a spread of around 40' at maturity

- Minimum of 6 hours per day of direct sun light

- Prefers wet soil conditions but has slight drought tolerance

- Provides amazing fall color that is yellow to red

- The fruits (samaras) provide food for squirrels and other rodents

- Rabbits and deer eat the tender shoots and leaves

River Birch

- Naturally grows along river banks, but can be planted about anywhere in US

- Relatively rapid growth: 13"-24" per year

- Tolerance for wetness and drought

- Unique curling bark

- Height of 40–70' and a spread of 40–60' at maturity

- Minimum of 4 hours per day of direct sun light

- Most borer-resistant birch

- Seeds are preferred by small songbirds

- Great for controlling erosion
