Project Statement

To design a site plan 1/16 scale with 3 sets of massing models, one of which shows interior major walls.

Project Description

I created a site plan by creating a collage of prints to represent a variety of materials to go on the site such as brick, gravel, concrete, pond, trees and parking. For the models I created a layout that establishes a piazza in the center of the site. The models also has all the performing arts in one building for direct access from the lobby, the admin offices are closest to Main Street for connection to the city, and the buildings keep a strong line along Sumter Street to mimic the previous building footprints which were small warehouses. The part of my scheme that sets me apart from everyone else's project is that I am developing the use of the facade of my Preforming Arts building to be active in order to enhance the use of the piazza. This design strategy will welcome art in many forms to preform outside of the building envelopes.

Summary of Feedback

While speaking to Schott on Friday, he suggested that I created a second active facade. He suggested that this combination would create a more defined space for the piazza. He liked the paths that I had laid over the site and the suggestion to sell part of the lot.

Today, I met with Brown. I explained to him what I was thinking and then what Schott had suggested. Brown believed that the original plan that I had was solid enough I need not make any major changes like Schott suggested by moving buildings.

Personal Critical Analysis

After talking with Schott and Brown, I decided that I liked the idea that Schott gave me. However, I did not see how making my site design more complex was going to be beneficial when my idea works with one facade - more isn't always better. I have a hard time keeping focused while working on the concepts of my projects. It will help me in the long run to just work with the design I created thus far and to just make small changes as needed. I know I will need to make small changes once I start entering in program and dimensions to the buildings. I'm pleased with where my site plan is at the moment. I have hopes of letting the site design inform how I should design the interior of the buildings.
